Cherie Anderson

One of the promising new programs of the Grand Ledge Police Department is the School Resource Officer or "SRO" at our local high school. The SRO is an experienced police officer who is stationed at the high school full time. This officer is responsible for the students, faculty, and the surrounding neighborhood. Officer Cherie Anderson is the current SRO. Officer Anderson maintains an office in the high school and is immediately available to the students, faculty, and neighborhood residents.

I. The Role of the SRO

  1. Defined by the community, the school faculty, and the students.
  2. Teacher as well as police officer.
  3. To help kids stay out of trouble by providing a positive role model AND by appropriate enforcement of the law.
II. Duties of the SRO

  1. Maintains a safe environment for the community, faculty, and students.

  2. Provides student counseling.

  3. Creates Peer Helping Networks.

  4. Establishes a dialogue between students and law enforcement.

  5. Re-affirms D.A.R.E.: Drug Awareness Resistance Education.

III. SRO Community Programs

  1. Parent education.

  2. Faculty and Staff development.

VI. SRO Programs for Juveniles

  1. Long-term violence prevention.

  2. Preventing altercations.

V. SRO Contributions to the School

  1. Participates in a full range of school activities.

  2. Spends time with students at lunch and recess.

  3. Works to gain students' trust.
